Fresh Faced with Dermalogica
“If I was your fairy godmother, what would you request in terms of skincare?”
“An oil-free and matte face throughout the day.”
I have made my relationship with acne a known struggle. Ever since high school, I’ve tried various products, completed numerous regimes and researched various methods to control breakouts. Thankfully, with the help of Dermalogica, I have acquired a more proactive, long-term approach to maintaining clear skin.
In the market to explore new products, I checked out the Dermalogica event at Sephora Yorkdale. During my visit, I met skincare expert, Direshni Vining (@dermalogicadireshni), who mapped out my skin and created a customized approach to target my skin’s problem areas. After an informative conversation about skincare, while I had a mini-facial, I brought home some products that will (and have so far) helped reduce my oil production, redness, acne and hyperpigmentation.
With Direshni’s help, here is my
updated 2020 skincare routine:
Skin Prep Scrub
I have never heard of a prep scrub until now. As the name suggests, this grainy scrub removes surface debris which enhances the absorption of further skincare products. Not to mention, my skin has felt the smoothest it’s ever been after rinsing.
Daily Microfoliant
I love brighter and smoother skin. The Daily Microfoliant is an exfoliating rice powder that contributes to a youthful glow. Literally a powder, water must be applied until it becomes a white paste that can be gently rubbed on the face. Direshni suggested to apply the microfoliant once a day (preferably in the morning) for only 3 times a week.
Special Cleansing Gel
Unlike other strongly scented cleansers that keep your skin extremely tight and dry, Dermalogica’s iteration felt more soothing on the face. I use my Clarisonic Mia to further the formula within my skin. Now that the prep scrub has cleared excess debris, the Clarisonic will provide my skin with a much needed deep clean. An added bonus is how the cleansing gel spreads generously throughout my entire face without using a lot of product.
Age Bright Clearing Serum
Direshni could not stop raving about this product. I was sold once she boldly stated that the serum “will change your life”. Ideally, the serum’s goal is to clear and prevent breakouts. Having used it for a few days, I can definitely confirm that I have seen results. I apply the serum with a jade roller to enhance absorption, blood flow and lymphatic drainage.
Multi-Active Toner
Similarly to the prep scrub, the toner promotes better absorption of the moisturizer. I have used a variety of toners in the past that have left my skin burning and super dry. However, I don’t feel that with Dermalogica’s. One of the key ingredients is mint so expect a nice cooling effect. I also love how the product came in a spray bottle. A quick spray allows for better product distribution and less waste. Let me just say, this ain’t no Mario Badescu.
Active Moist
For someone with oily skin, the Active Moist is the game changer. Many previous moisturizers I have used leave a thick film of product on my face which feels heavy and uncomfortable throughout the day. Personally, I think this contributes to my excess oil production. Dermalogica’s iteration is light weight and spreads generously. Applied immediately after I tone, the Active Moist will help with dehydration and skin texture.
Clear Start Mattifying Moisturizer
This product convinced me to add Dermalogica to my skincare routine. I have tried many mattifying moisturizers from various brands, but this one produced the results that I desired. As the name suggests, this light-weight moisturizer has kept my face (especially my forehead) free from shine throughout the duration of my day. Made with Willow Bark and Green Tea extract and Vitamin C, this formula shields acne-prone skin from everyday pollutants in the atmosphere.
Age Bright Spot Fader
Direshni’s skin mapping revealed that my skin suffers from dehydration and hyperpigmentation. Therefore, the final step of my routine is a spot treatment that helps prevent aging and over-drying. Directed to be applied twice daily, I am hoping that this product will reduce marks produced from acne scarring.
I am excited to add Dermalogica to my daily skincare routine. In fact, I look forward to dropping by the Dermalogica offices located at 70 University to see their full range of products and recieve a customized skincare regime from Direshni. Speaking of Direshni, I want to give her a huge shout out for the skin mapping, facial and recommending me products that have been effective. I am excited to see how my skin improves this year!
