It is no secret that I love designer labels. It is exhilarating trying on the latest runway and swiping my card. Having pieces from Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent and Tisci’s Burberry, I wanted to discover brands I have not previously owned. Enter Prada, the Italian staple known for their iconic nylon accessories. I have never been attracted to the brand until recently when many of my favourite influencers have incorporated the nylon styles into their looks. However, will I end up giving into hype surrounding the brand?

Obviously.

While in Mexico, I visited La Isla, Cancun’s premier destination for high street and luxury shopping. I entered several stores hoping to replace my dying Common Projects Achilles Sneakers, however I was not having any luck. With a change of plans, I decided to set my sights on a classic Prada bum bag. I entered Cancun’s only Prada boutique and was greeted by friendly associates and refreshing air conditioning.

As I explored the store, my eyes were instantly drawn to a pair of retro trainers that left me excited and confused (shopping tends to bring out polarizing emotions). Thankfully, my advisor and new friend, Melissa Torres came to my rescue. She was not just knowledgeable with products and brand history, but she was extremely helpful with styling. Ultimately, she convinced to opt for a statement piece instead of a typical white leather sneaker, suggesting that I can dress up the shoe wearing a slim fit suit or dress down the shoe with and some tapered joggers and camel trench coat in the fall.

Despite loving the design, I was sold after hearing the inspiration behind the kicks. The shoe was inspired by the classic styles of the 70s, hence the white wedged heel and pointy toe. However, the House modernized the silhouette by adding pops of yellow and the motor cross variation of the classic logo. Furthermore, the combination of the iconic nylon coupled with pre-distressed suede gave the shoe more character which only enhanced the juxtaposition of a classic style with a modern edge. I was sold.

My experience felt like a night out shopping with friends and bottle service. Cesar got the champagne flowing as Melissa and I discussed school, politics, fashion, pop culture and travel tips. She explained that tourists can waive the taxes on their purchases when they present their passport and immigration card. Alas, I left empty handed that night, but made a triumphant return 2 days later.

Cesar greeted us and Ricky got the sparking water flowing (I mean I couldn’t be inebriated for the second time). Alas, Melissa brought out my newest babies in the iconic navy blue box and secured the bag. Speaking of bag, I was stunned to know that the Prada shopping bags were actual totes exclusive to Mexico for the summer collection. Although expensive, I could not be happier with my purchase and the customer service.

The media stereotypes luxury shopping with cold style advisors that profile against “poor” consumers. However, the team at Prada Cancun have surpassed my standards. Melissa, Ricky and Cesar were enthusiastic to help out and ensure my family experienced the world of Prada with pleasure. I could tell they worked well as a team and desired to form strong client relationships. My experience made me want to learn more about the House and own even more of their pieces. I highly recommend visiting La Isla’s Prada.

Candidly,

Jonah
