With fashion week over, all new trends for the upcoming season have been set by all the major designers. It is safe to say that Spring 2017 will be a bold, vicious, and loud time for menswear. From mixing patterns and prints, wearing bright bold colours, and borrowing elements from the outdoors, menswear is nothing but daring and unapologetic.

ATHLEISURE

As spring comes with warmer weather, it is the perfect time to stop procrastinating on those New Year’s resolutions and actually start getting fit. Athleisure has been done in previous seasons, but the trend has been elevated this year. One of the most anticipated shows was the collaboration of Vetements with a plethora of sportswear designers such as Champion, Reebok, and Schott, just to name a few. The looks showcased the versatility of each piece which can be worn from the gym to even a night out on the town. Other designers like MSGM and Gosha Rubchinsky have incorporated matching sweatsuits and varsity stripes to the mix, which only emphasize that sportswear has moved beyond the gym.

PRINTS AND PATTERNS

From stripes, to checks, to camouflage, designers intertwined all these elements into one look. At first, it may seem like a disaster, but they tend to compliment each other in an odd way. According to GQ, vertical stripes of various sizes will be on the radar this season. One look that I am obsessed with is matching stripes with camouflage. Whether it be a striped tee with a camouflage jacket, it will make your look more edgy and ready for the warmer seasons ahead.

WINDBREAKERS AND PARKAS

With the rainy days associated with the season, a waterproof jacket is a must. Drawing inspiration from historic British fashion, the parka, along with its springtime equivalent, the trench coat, have been upgraded to boast patterns and colour blocks made out of all new material. Now using nylon and PVC, these pieces will be seen as the replacement for the camel jacket in warmer seasons ahead. Speaking of jackets, another trend observed was tying a jacket around the waist. Similar to a plaid shirt, designers from Louis Vuitton to J.W. Anderson have sent models down the runway with bare arms and covered hips.

CAMPING BACKPACKS

Warmer weather means more adventure. Designers showcase all new backpacks that are designed with the finest materials, again with prints and bold designs. These sacks are fashion forward and extremely practical as well. There are straps for skateboards, yoga mats, cup holders for bottles. All these practicalities are topped with rope detailing, another big trend this season, that emphasizes that spring is the season to get out and explore.

CROPPED AND SLOUCHY

This season, many ankles were shown on the runway as cropped pants were the craze. Pretty much every fashion house had models showcase tapered and pleated trousers paired with a statement graphic tee or a nice jacket. Having a shorter fit on a pant only elongates the body with a modernized silhouette on a piece that is a must in every man’s wardrobe.
