My quest to expand my palette on plant-based food continues in high gear. With the long-term goal of eventually becoming completely plant-based, I realize that taste does not have to be compromised. This weekend, I checked out By Chloe, a new vegan restaurant at Yorkdale Mall. Located in the Restoration Hardware wing, the popular New York City established chain housed a variety of delicious meals crafted by celebrity chef, Chloe Coscarelli. With only 20 locations worldwide (and only 1 in Canada), By Chloe shows that great healthy, eating at an affordable price point can be achieved.
Like any typical fast food restaurant, patrons ordered and seated at tables that were available. However, differentiated By Chloe was their modern, quirky furnishings and branded in-house products available for purchase. In fact, I was initially drawn to the restaurant for it’s cute facade and “In My Feelings” inspired neon signage that read “Kiwi, Do you love me?” The chain collaborated with Peace Collective to produces branded graphic tees, dad hats and reusable water bottles. They also sold blended coffee and dog treats which further demonstrated the restaurant’s attempt to further promote plant-based dining in the lifestyles of many.
For lunch, I ordered the Classic Burger combo with Original Air Baked Fries and an Iced Coffee with Oat Milk. I was torn between the Classic Burger and the Pesto Meatball Sandwich so looks like I’ll be going back to try the latter. I also ordered a cup of Avocado Pesto Pasta which added a warm, savoury taste to my meal. I’ve listed the ingredients of my order below:
The Classic Burger: Tempeh-lentil-chia-walnut patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, beet ketchup, special sauce, potato bun (gluten free option available).
Air Bakes Fries: A gluten free side that comes in original or sweet potato.
Pesto Meatball: Italian meatballs (portobello and veggie), marinara, sweet peppers, basil pesto, cashew mozzarella, almond parmesan, potato sub roll.
Avocado Pesto Pasta: Avocado-cashew pesto, grape tomato, almond parmesan (gluten free option available).
If you are planning on starting a plant-based journey in the new year, I highly recommend checking out By Chloe. At perfectly-sized portions, I was full the entire day and didn’t feel guilty or sluggish, especially after devouring a burger with fries. In addition to good food, the restaurant is an “instagrammer’s paradise” according to the manager. I mean, she did have a point. Have you seen their bathrooms? Overall, I enjoyed my dining experience and will return to try out more options on their menu. For more information, check out By Chloe’s instagram to see how they’re changing the way people consume fast food.
Candidly,
Jonah
